Ophthalmologist wins Republican primary in Philadelphia
Breaking news
PHILADELPHIA — Melissa Brown, MD, won a hotly contested Republican primary yesterday. Reports in The Philadelphia Inquirer indicated her opponent had an early lead, but Dr. Brown was able to declare victory by 11 p.m.
“This is a long time coming,” said Dr. Brown, a 51-year-old former nurse who failed to win her party's nomination in 1998. “We worked hard, and we finally got here,” she told the Inquirer.
Dr. Brown will challenge U.S. Rep. Joe Hoeffel in the fall.
Dr. Brown's opponent in the primary tried to persuade voters that as an abortion-rights advocate, Dr. Brown would be “indistinguishable” from Rep. Hoeffel. Dr. Brown responded that as a woman and an ophthalmologist, not only would she be different from Rep. Hoeffel, but that she is “a different kind of candidate with different kinds of skills [who] has a lot to offer in Washington.”
