Ophthalmologist appointed as Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Edwin Stone, MD, has been appointed a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, one of 12 scientists in the country to receive such an appointment this year and the first ophthalmologist to have his research recognized with the award.

Dr. Stone is the director of the Roy J. Carver Molecular Ophthalmology Laboratory here at the University of Iowa. He has been leader or co-leader in investigations that have located genes responsible for 14 eye diseases and identified more than 70 mutations that cause a range of diseases. Dr. Stone is also director of the University of Iowa Center for Macular Degeneration.
