Ophthalmic Imaging Systems' OIS EMR version 4.1 receives 08 CCHIT certification

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The 4.1 version of Ophthalmic Imaging System's OIS electronic medical record system has received 08 certification as an ambulatory electronic health record for office-based use from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, OIS announced in a press release.

The OIS EMR platform is designed to work with the company's OIS PM and OIS Symphony Image Management systems, according to the release.

Under a newly updated Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) EHR testing protocol, which added 19 criteria to the 200 required in 2007, this 08 certification ensures that the OIS EMR system is compatible with other EMR systems.

Among other criteria, the certification confirms that the OIS EMR platform has access to patient medication history, formulary and eligibility, enhanced medication dosing capabilities, as well as an improved ability to prevent adverse reactions to medications. In addition, the certification ensures that the platform has enhanced diagnostic image viewing capabilities and can efficiently manage patient consent forms and laboratory results.

"Two key new areas of interoperability are required to achieve 08 certification," Mark Leavitt, MD, PhD, chair of the CCHIT, said in the release. "First, ambulatory EHRs must be capable of advanced electronic prescribing functions so physicians can qualify for bonuses under Medicare's new incentive program. Second, EHRs must be able to send and receive an electronic patient summary. These and other new criteria will ensure that certified health IT products help improve quality, safety and efficiency while protecting the privacy of health information."
