More than 70% of adult AIDS patients experience an ocular complication during the course of the disease, a literature review revealed.
Breno Rocha Lima, MD, reviewed the literature in English to identify the ophthalmic complications of the systemic disease.
According to Dr. Lima, orbital and adnexal findings include tumors of periocular tissues and external infections. Among the common anterior segment manifestations are keratitis, keratoconjunctivitis sicca and iridocyclitis. Common posterior segment findings include HIV-associated retinopathy and retinal or choroidal infections.
HIV has been associated with neuro-ophthalmic complications such as visual field defects, papilledema and diplopia, Dr. Lima said.
The review is published in the Digital Journal of Ophthalmology.
