A one-piece acrylic IOL resulted in good visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, refraction and defocus curve in eyes with both large and small pupils, a study said.

The study included 51 eyes implanted with a Tecnis one-piece IOL (Abbott Medical Optics) after cataract surgery. The mean follow-up time was 3 months.

Mean total spherical aberration was reduced to almost zero in pupils with 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-mm optical zones.

Mean uncorrected visual acuity was 20/25 ± 8 letters, and mean best corrected visual acuity was 20/18 ± 4 letters. BCVA was the same using both a 3-mm and a 5-mm pinhole.

In addition, contrast sensitivity and defocus curves with both a 3-mm and a 5-mm pinhole did not show a statistically significant difference, the study said.
