ZAGREB, Croatia — Patients with chlamydial conjunctivitis are just as likely to have their symptoms resolve after a single 1-g dose of azithromycin as they are with a twice-daily, 10-day treatment of doxycycline, according to a study.

Researchers with University Clinical Hospital randomized 78 patients with chlamydial conjunctivitis to receive either azithromycin or doxycycline. Follow up was between 10 and 12 days and 4 to 6 weeks after the initial treatment. Fifty-one patients completed the study.

Eradication of the chlamydia bacteria was achieved in 23 of the 25 patients on azithromycin and in 25 of the 26 patients on doxycycline.

The study is published in the April issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
