OMD leads to significant macular changes

NAGOYA, Japan — Patients with occult macular dystrophy often show significant anatomic changes in the macula, according to a study.

Mineo Kondo, MD, and colleagues here with Nagoya University School of Medicine measured the foveal thicknesses of 22 eyes of 11 patients with occult macular dystrophy (OMD) and compared these with results in 27 eyes of 20 age-matched controls.

The mean foveal thickness was significantly thinner in the group with OMD. Of the 22 eyes in that group, 18 had a foveal thickness that was thinner than the lower limit of the normal range.

The study is published in the May issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
