WASHINGTON — The Puerto Rican legislature declined to pass a bill that “would have allowed the broadest optometric scope of practice in the United States,” according to a press release from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

If the bill had passed, Puerto Rico would have allowed the broadest scope of practice in the United States, according to a local ophthalmologist quoted in the press release. As introduced, the bill would have allowed optometrists to prescribe any diagnostic, topical or oral drug and enable them to perform injection procedures, according to the press release. The bill also allowed the optometry board to authorize optometrists to perform any surgery, including cataract and laser surgery, the AAO release said.
