MESSINA, Italy Sodium hyaluronate may effectively reduce ocular surface damage associated with dry eye syndrome, according to a small study.
Researchers here conducted an efficacy analysis on 44 patients with medium to severe dry eye. Patients were treated with either one drop of preservative-free sodium hyaluronate or one drop of saline four to eight times daily for 3 months. Bulbar impression cytology, slit lamp examinations and subjective symptoms were evaluated after 1, 2 and 3 months.
Eyes treated with sodium hyaluronate had improved impression cytology scores at the 3 month mark. The difference from placebo was statistically significant (P = .036). No adverse events were reported.
The study is published in the February issue of the British Journal of Ophthalmology.
