Ocular surface, anterior segment predominate ER procedures

Ocular surface and anterior segment diagnoses are the most common emergency room eye presentations, according to a retrospective review.

Nikhil L. Kumar, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Sydney in Australia retrospectively reviewed the charts of the 10,599 patients who came into the Sydney Eye Hospital Emergency Department during the daytime over the course of 1 year. On average, 46 patients were seen daily, and 57.7% were men.

The most common reasons for presentation were conjunctivitis, keratitis, cataract, corneal abrasion and iridocyclitis. Statistically significant associations existed between sex and selected diagnoses, and between age and almost all of the most common diagnoses.

The study is published in the December issue of Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology.
