ALAMEDA, Calif. — OcuGene, a genetic test for glaucoma, will be distributed in Italy by SIFI SpA, according to InSite Vision, the test’s developer. An 8-year distribution agreement gives exclusive rights to SIFI, which plans to introduce OcuGene in Italy during the second half of 2003, once it has finalized premarketing and internal support for the product.

This marks the first international agreement for distribution of OcuGene, said S. Kumar Chandrasekaran, PhD, InSite’s president and chief executive officer.

OcuGene is a proprietary system of genetic testing for primary open-angle glaucoma. It screens for the TIGR mt-1 variant. People with this variant tend to have a more aggressive form of glaucoma and have shown more visual field damage than patients without the variant.
