Nutritional supplement shows benefit for dry AMD on multifocal ERG
A pilot study found that a daily nutritional supplement formula may improve vision and retinal function in patients with dry age-related macular degeneration, according to a press release from Macular Health LLC, the supplement's developer and the sponsor of the study.
Researchers used multifocal electroretinogram (ERG) recordings and visual acuity testing to measure the effects of the supplement in 10 subjects. These were compared to measurements in 10 subjects not taking supplements.
The Macular Health formula includes high-dose beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, lutein and zeaxanthin, according to the press release.
After 2 months, the supplement group showed improved visual acuity, macular function and amplitude density, according to the release.
The study data were presented in a poster at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting in Las Vegas.
