Novel injector promises smooth delivery of a standard-size lens through smaller incision

BOSTON — A new injector that delivers a proprietary IOL through a small incision does not sacrifice IOL lens geometry or design, according to a specialist here.

The RaySert microincision IOL injector system (Rayner) was designed to deliver Rayner's T-flex line of IOLs, Ashokkumar Vyas, FRCS (Ophth), said at a media event sponsored by Rayner at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual meeting. Rather than designing a smaller, thinner lens to fit through a sub-2.4 mm incision, Rayner designed the injector to deliver a standard lens through the smaller incision, Dr. Vyas said.

"Just because you want to inject through a small incision, it does not mean you have to compromise on lens design," he said. "The lens will be in the eye forever; the incision will not."

The injection system, now in its third generation of development, features a 1.8-mm rounded tip, allowing delivery of the lens through an incision as small as 2.2 mm; however, because the shaft length is 1.5 mm, surgeons can also point the tip inside the anterior chamber for lens delivery if they are more comfortable with that technique, Dr. Vyas said.
