THE HAGUE, Netherlands - Dutch firm i-Optics has released a retinal scanner in Europe that does not require pupil dilation, according to a news release.

The EasyScan, a non-mydriatic retinal imaging system, can record images through pupils as small as 2 mm, according to the release. Because dilation is not required, the device reduces patient wait time and allows patients to drive immediately after the exam.

The scanner also allows for scans to be done more quickly, the release said. It allows the operator to guide patients' gaze with internal fixation lights, making for easier images of the central and nasal field.

The EasyScan will be released in the United States once 510(k) clearance has been obtained through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the release said.
