No change in pupil size, shift after uncomplicated in-the-bag IOL implantation

Uncomplicated in-the-bag IOL implantation does not appear to influence postoperative pupil size and shift, according to a study by researchers in Turkey.
Gungor Sobaci, MD, and colleagues investigated changes in entrance pupil size and pupil center shift under low mesopic (0.06 lux) and photopic (60 lux) conditions in 55 patients who underwent unilateral in-the-bag IOL implantation and 55 age- and sex-matched control patients with bilateral cataracts. They published their results in the October issue of Journal of Refractive Surgery.
Patients in the IOL implantation group averaged 64.2 years of age and had a best corrected visual acuity of 20/20 in their pseudophakic eyes. Patients in the control group averaged 63.6 years of age and, other than bilateral cataract, had neither ocular nor systemic problems affecting the pupil, according to the study.
In the IOL implantation group, under low mesopic conditions, the difference in pupil size was 5.12 mm in pseudophakic eyes and 5.13 mm in phakic eyes. Under photopic conditions, the pupil size difference was 3.44 mm in pseudophakic eyes and 3.45 mm in phakic eyes.
These differences were not statistically significant, the authors reported.
Also in the IOL implantation group, the difference in pupil shift was 0.11 mm in pseudophakic eyes and 0.12 mm in phakic eyes. These differences were also not statistically significant (P = .83).
In the control group, differences in pupil size were not statistically significant under low mesopic (P = .59) or photopic conditions (P = .60). Differences in pupil shift were also not statistically significant in this group (P = .71), according to the study.
