BETHESDA, Md. — The National Institutes of Health is calling on scientists to release to the public the results of research supported by the NIH within 12 months of its publication. The NIH announced this voluntary new policy in a press release.

According to the release, peer-reviewed NIH-funded research publications will be available in a Web-based archive to be managed by the National Library of Medicine, a division of NIH. The NIH hopes this policy will achieve several goals, including creating a stable archive of peer-reviewed research publications, securing a searchable compendium of those research publications and making published results of NIH-funded research more accessible to the public, the release noted.

Once an author’s manuscript has been accepted for publication, the new policy requests authors to submit an electronic version of the manuscript to the Web archive. The NIH said in the release that this policy will go into effect on May 2.

Additional information on the policy can be found on the NIH Web site: http://www.nih.gov/about/publicaccess/index.htm
