Nidek announced that it is working with experts at Bascom Palmer to help physicians detect Fusarium keratitis infections using confocal imaging.
The company stated in a press release that it will work closely with doctors at Bascom Palmer, one of the first centers to draw public attention to the outbreak of Fusarium infections, to establish a reading center for physicians who do not see cases of fungal keratitis routinely.
The company has also set up a Web site, www.usa.nidek.com/confocal, to help doctors locate Confoscan4 scanning slit confocal microscopes in their area.
“Any one of our users or confocal sites that question the imagery they receive from the cornea using the Confoscan can send images [to Bascom Palmer] digitally for review for diagnosis,” Nidek Sales Manager Dave MacLellan told Ocular Surgery News in a phone interview.
The Confoscan4 scanning slit confocal microscope can image fungal keratitis infections in vivo, according to the company.
“The Confoscan is invaluable to us in early diagnosis of fungal keratitis. Identifying the type of infection and being able to initiate the appropriate treatment as soon as possible is vital to keeping these infections from becoming critical,” said Eduardo C. Alfonso, MD, of the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, in a press release.
“A lot of cornea specialists will already be able to see the fungal infection in the cornea, but in cases where physicians need expert advice, Dr. Alfonso will be available,” Mr. MacLellan said.
