FREMONT, Calif. — A 200-Hz eye tracker for use with Nidek’s EC-5000 excimer laser system has been granted U.S. regulatory approval for marketing, according to a press release from Nidek.

The 200 Hz Eye Tracker has been in use outside the United States for several years, according to the company. It is “a key element” in the development of the Nidek Advanced Vision Excimer Laser (NAVEX) platform for customized refractive surgery, the press release said.

“The new 200 Hz CCD camera eye tracker system constantly monitors the position of the patient’s undilated pupil and is not affected by instruments passing in and out of the surgical field,” said Ted Shimomura, executive vice president and general manager of Nidek, in the release. The tracker uses iris detection and multiple infrared beams and can both actively and passively track the eye, he said.

The EC-5000 is approved for use in the United States for LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy for myopia with or without astigmatism. The NAVEX system is still investigational in the United States.
