Summit Autonomous unveils two products
WALTHAM, Mass. Officials from Summit Autonomous introduced the LadarVision 4000 laser system and the freestanding CustomCornea Wavefront System at the companys annual shareholders meeting, held during the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) annual meeting in Boston.
During the shareholders meeting, Marguerite McDonald, MD, provided an update on the clinical trials currently being conducted on the CustomCornea system. Additionally, Ronald R. Krueger, MD, discussed the features and benefits of the LadarTracker and compared the benefits of this system with video eye tracking systems.
LaserSight announces Regional Reference Strategy
WINTER PARK, Fla. LaserSight announced a Regional Reference Center Strategy that will join leading ophthalmologists within community-based practices and academic medical centers.
Under this plan, launched at ASCRS, these reference centers that are purchasing the LaserSight LaserScan LSX flying spot scanning system also will commit to a minimum number of procedures per year. These centers also will educate and train the physicians who are considering the purchase of a LaserSight LSX.
Centers within this plan also will participate in various clinical studies and research, provide leadership at regional users meetings, publish and present clinical results and serve as the company's media designates within the regions. LaserSight plans to have 30 reference centers across the country. Currently, the company has commitments from more than 10 centers and expects to reach its goal of 30 centers by the end of the year.
Also at the meeting, the company introduced its line of Astra CustomEyes products. This line includes AstraTrack, an eye tracking system designed to meet demands for performing the CustomEyes procedure; AstraPro, the software for planning the CustomEyes treatments; and AstraMax, an integrated ophthalmic diagnostic workstation that provides the data required to plan the CustomEyes treatment. The company said the Astra CustomEyes technology, together with LaserSights LSX narrow beam scanning excimer laser system, combines to offer an advanced platform for personalizing refractive surgical treatments.
Rayner introduces injectable hydrophilic acrylic IOL
HOVE, England Rayner Intraocular Lenses unveiled the Centerflex, an injectable hydrophilic acrylic IOL, at the ASCRS meeting. Rayner officials said the lens offers superior centration, stability and ease of handling.
Using AVH technology, the haptics have been developed to resist an excessive or asymmetrical capsular contraction, providing increased support for the lens as the capsule contracts. According to Rayner officials, the Centerflex lens features a square edge optic, and haptics can be inserted through a 2.8-mm incision with the Rayner Injection System. The lens is composed of RayAcryl, which, with 26% water content, offers exceptional biocompatibility, as well as excellent handling characteristics, according to the company. The new lens has a similar tear strength to silicone yet unfolds in a controlled manner and provides consistent performance across the power range.
Additionally, during the opening sessions of the ASCRS meeting, Rayner, the manufacturer of the first IOL, and Sir Harold Ridley, the inventor, were honored with a video presentation commemorating the first 50 years of the IOL.
ScienceBased Health launches KeraCaps Complex
CORTE MADERA, Calif. ScienceBased Health launched KeraCaps Complex at the ASCRS meeting. According to the company, this nutritional supplement is designed to alleviate side effects and speed healing following laser vision correction surgery.
KeraCaps Complex is an oral nutritional product that combines omega fatty acids to help restore natural eye moisture. It contains components of HydroEye, which has demonstrated effectiveness in maintaining eye moisture, according to the company. KeraCaps Complex is to be taken in combination with ScienceBased Healths ocular supplement Ocular Essentials.
ScienceBased Health officials said they will introduce KeraCaps Complex to surgeons who perform LASIK.
SurgiLight launches new IR-laser technology
ORLANDO, Fla. SurgiLight introduced its IR laser for presbyopia treatment at the ASCRS.
The company also recently submitted to the Food and Drug Administration for 510K approval an application for its water jet technology for ophthalmic surgery.
