New toric lens shows high predictability, good centration

ISTANBUL, Turkey — A new toric IOL shows high predictability and good centration, according to a study presented here.

The Basis Z IOL (1stQ), a one-piece hydrophilic lens with toric optic design was implanted in 41 eyes of 32 patients by Detlef Holland, MD, of Eye Clinic Bellevue in Kiel, Germany.

The planned mean sphere was -0.25 D, which was achieved at 6 months. Mean astigmatism improved from -2 D to -0.5 D. At 6 months, mean uncorrected visual acuity was 20/25 and mean best corrected visual acuity was 20/20.

"I had to reposition the lens in three cases due to rotation, but this happened at the beginning of my learning curve. I learned how crucial the capsulorrhexis is in this respect. After using a 5-mm rhexis, which precisely overlapped the optic by 1 mm, rotation no longer occurred," Dr. Holland said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

Longer follow-up is needed to assess long-term stability of the implant, he said.
