New questionnaire better measures health-related quality of life in adult strabismus patients

Am J Ophthalmol. 2009;148(4):558-562.

The 20-item Adult Strabismus questionnaire, or AS-20, more effectively measured adult strabismus patients' reduced quality of life than the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire, or VFQ-25, a study found.

"The new AS-20 seems to be more sensitive than the VFQ-25 for detecting reduced [health-related quality of life] in adult strabismus, and therefore may be a more useful tool for clinical assessment and clinical trials," the authors said.

The cross-sectional study looked at 84 patients with strabismus with a median age of 53 years. Of those patients, 65 were considered diplopic and 19 were nondiplopic. All patients completed the AS-20 and VFQ-25 questionnaires.

The study compared the number of patients considered below normal overall and according to diplopia status. It found that significantly more patients who took the AS-20 scored below normal (90%) than those who took the VFQ-25 (29%).

"The VFQ-25 seemed to be insensitive to nondiplopic strabismus: no patients scored below normal on composite score and no more than 11% scored below normal on VFQ-25 subscales," the researchers said.
