New microincision tip enhances quality of surgery

ROME — The new microincision tip of the Alcon AquaLase device holds several advantages compared with the previous model, according to one surgeon speaking here.

"The intraoperative use of the [microincision] tip is similar to the standard AquaLase procedure, but a smaller incision can be used, with the obvious advantage of having a more stable chamber," Peter Rieck, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

In addition, the slightly bent design of the tip has the advantage of reaching the nucleus fragments more easily and polishing the capsule more efficiently.

In addition, almost no heat is generated at the wound level.

Dr. Rieck said that the new tip has increased the potential of the AquaLase procedure. Compared with ultrasound phaco, AquaLase is safer and more gentle, and is particularly indicated for soft cataracts, refractive lens exchange and cataracts in children.
