PARIS — A new IOL exhibits promising features for natural integration into the capsular bag, according to two surgeons.

Pierre Fournié, MD, and Catherine Boureau, MD, gave separate presentations about the Cristalens IOL at a company-sponsored symposium held during the meeting of the French Society of Ophthalmology.

"The unique haptics design of the Artis enables this IOL to maintain a constant contact arch with the capsular bag, regardless of the diameter changes occurring during accommodation and the more stable changes occurring with age. The lens remains centered, aligned to the ciliary processes. No anterior or posterior displacement occurs," Dr. Fournié said.

In a preliminary series of 35 eyes with a follow-up of 6 months, the lens showed excellent visual results and no sign of capsular opacification.

"This is probably due to the tight capsular fusion around the optic of the lens, which prevents cell migration," Dr. Boureau said.

A further advantage of this lens is that it can be inserted through a 1.7-mm incision.

"[It is] a true small-incision IOL — perhaps the first small-incision IOL that creates an effective barrier against [posterior capsular opacification] formation," Dr. Boureau said.
