WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration will crack down harder on deceptive pharmaceutical marketing and increase the speed of its drug approval process, according to Mark McClellan, MD, the agency’s new director.

In an interview with The New York Times, Dr. McClellan said he wanted to accelerate the approval process for brand-name and generic drugs as well as for medical devices. He said another goal for his agency will be more aggressive policing of claims made to the public in prescription drug advertising.
