HERSHEY, Pa. A center that will focus on diabetic retinopathy research was launched here.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation announced the launch of its $6.3 million JDRF Center for Mechanisms and Intervention of Diabetic Retinopathy at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The center will be funded over a 5-year period, according to a press release from the JDRF.
An interdisciplinary team of 20 researchers, under the leadership of Thomas Gardner, MD, MS, will focus on the biological causes of impairment in the early stages of diabetic retinopathy and will use the findings to conduct pre-clinical and clinical trials, according to the news release. Projects at the center will attempt to determine points in retinal metabolism that can be targeted for treatment.
Among items the center is researching are the role of microglia cells in retinopathy and whether a medication approved for use in acne can reduce or ameliorate the progression of retinopathy. For more information, go to http://www.jdf.org
