New device provides valid objective measurement of bulbar redness, study says

A new photometric system may offer an alternative to subjective scales for measuring ocular hyperemia severity, according to a study by researchers in Canada. Such an objective system could be particularly useful for reducing variability between investigators in multicenter studies, the study authors said.
Luigina Sorbara, OD, MSc, and colleagues at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, evaluated the efficacy of the Spectrascan650 Photometer (Photo Research) for measuring bulbar redness in 24 patients. The researchers compared the hyperemia measured by the device with that of standard grading methods after 1 week of daily use and 6 months of overnight use of a silicone hydrogel contact lens.
The Spectrascan650 Photometer measures chromaticity values, a physical analog of redness, greenness and blueness in an image, according to the study authors. The researchers validated the device using repeated measurements on the photographic CCLRU scale.
They also found a significant correlation between the device's CIEu chromaticity values and the analog data up to 6 months' follow-up, the authors said. The study is published in the March issue of Contact Lens and Anterior Eye.
