ROME — A new device with corneal visualization may be a breakthrough in the assessment of corneal properties before and after cross-linking.

The Corvis ST (Corneal Visualization Scheimpflug Technology, Oculus) provides real-time, viewable measurement of corneal biomechanics. A high-speed Scheimpflug camera records movements of the cornea, with more than 4,000 images per second, while it is exposed to an air impulse.

"The principle of measuring the corneal response to pressure and release is the same as in the [Ocular Response Analyzer, Reichert], but this new device provides a unique combination of multiple measurements," Paolo Vinciguerra, MD, said at the meeting of the Italian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Deformation amplitude, applanation length and corneal velocity are the three principle parameters on which corneal biomechanics can be evaluated and compared before and after a cross-linking treatment.

Dr. Vinciguerra, who has been given one of the two Corvis ST prototypes currently in use, said that the changes induced by the cross-linking treatment in keratoconus eyes were visible and measurable immediately after the treatment, and that further improvements were observed in the following months.

"This device will also allow us to compare the results of different ways of performing cross-linking, thus helping us to define the best treatment protocol and standardize the technique," he said.
