A new bifocal, acrylic IOL showed good results for distance and near visual acuities and satisfactory intermediate vision at 6 weeks follow-up after bilateral cataract surgery, according to a study by researchers in Germany.

Hakan Kaymak, MD, and Ulrich Mester, MD, investigated the functional results after bilaterally implanting the Acri.Lisa (Acri.Tec) IOL in 40 eyes of 20 patients who averaged 68 years.

At 6 weeks postop, binocular uncorrected visual acuity for distance averaged –0.02 and best corrected visual acuity for distance averaged –0.07.

Also at 6 weeks, near UCVA averaged 0.09 and near BCVA averaged 0.04, according to the study.

"Visual acuity was significantly superior when tested binocularly compared to monocular testing (P < .01)," the authors said.

"The depth of field showed an intermediate decimal VA of 0.6±0.21 at 70 cm and a pseudoaccommodation range of 5.5 D," they said.

Overall, 16 patients reported experiencing "slight" halos, but no patients were seriously impaired, the authors noted.

The study is published in the December issue of Der Ophthalmologe.
