SAN DIEGO — An intracorneal inlay for patients with presbyopic emmetropia showed strong improvements in near vision, according to a study presented here.

The KAMRA intracorneal inlay (AcuFocus) has 8,400 perforations, maximizing nutrient flow and minimizing symptoms, Kevin L. Waltz, MD, OD, said at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery meeting.

The prospective, nonrandomized, multicenter study enrolled 507 patients with naturally occurring presbyopic emmetropia at 24 sites throughout the U.S., Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. Follow-up was 18 months.

"We had very nice improvement in near acuity, had excellent maintenance of all other acuities, especially the binocular acuity, and we had very low incidence of complications," Dr. Waltz said.

Mesopic and photopic contrast sensitivity remained unchanged through the first 12 months postop, and a low incidence of complications occurred.
