SANTA ANA, Calif. NASA has approved LASIK technologies from Advanced Medical Optics for use on U.S. astronauts, AMO announced in a press release.
The agency made the decision after reviewing military clinical data on AMO's Advanced CustomVue LASIK with the IntraLase femtosecond laser, which showed that the combination of technologies has a better safety profile and provides superior visual results, according to the release.
"NASA followed the Naval Aviation clinical studies closely with a particular interest in both safety and quality of vision under extreme conditions," said Steven C. Schallhorn, MD, a retired U.S. Navy captain and investigator in multiple refractive surgery studies, in the release.
"Wavefront-guided and femtosecond lasers were proven to provide excellent safety with consistent visual results of 20/20 or better. LASIK was able to withstand even the most extreme rigors of warfare and flight. All surgical procedures have risks, but with this exceptional track record, the average consumer has nothing to fear from LASIK," he said.
