Myopic eyes elongated compared with emmetropic eyes, study finds

Eyes with myopia are elongated relative to emmetropic eyes, more so in length than in height and even less so in width, according to an Australian study.

David Atchison and colleagues at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane measured the internal length, height and width of eyes of 88 participants ranging in age from 18 to 36 years. The refractive status of the participants ranged from emmetropia up to a myopic error of –12 D.

As the participants’ level of myopia increased, so did the measurements in all three dimensions, but the increase was greatest in length, less in height, and even less in width, the researchers found.

The study is published in the October issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.
