BUDAPEST, Hungary — As the number of patients grows and the follow-up of several surgeons increases, the Crystalens HD accommodating IOL shows more promise, a speaker said here.

At the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, Mark Tomalla, MD, of Duisburg, Germany, presented the results of 48 eyes implanted with the Crystalens HD (Bausch & Lomb), 17 of which have a follow-up of 6 months.

"We achieved convincing clinical results not only at distance, but also at near and intermediate," Dr. Tomalla said. "All of the patients need no spectacle correction for distance and have optimal intermediate vision."

"No reading glasses are needed by 71% of the patients, and the remaining 29% only wear them occasionally. Patient satisfaction was well above the average," he said.

Similar results were shown by Angel Lopez Castro, MD, of Madrid, Spain. He said that 70% of his 42 patients achieved J1 and 80% achieved J2 uncorrected.

"J3 could be seen at intermediate by 100% of the patients," Dr. Lopez Castro said. "At distance, all the patients were 20/20 or better with correction."

In her series of 26 eyes with 6 months of follow-up, Kristien Vanhoucke, MD, of Mol, Belgium, observed very good vision at all distances. Spectacle independence was achieved in more than 90% of the cases.

"Accurate preoperative measurements and strict targeting are key factors in improving the results with Crystalens HD," she said.

No photic phenomena were reported.
