Hawaiian Eye, long known for its comprehensive program in a casual atmosphere, achieves its longevity by sticking to five basic foundations: approachable faculty, customized learning, intimate education, interactive format and great location.
It is a very comprehensive update on cataract, IOL, refractive surgery, glaucoma, retina, cornea and external disease in a beautiful setting that promotes active interaction between faculty and participants, Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, OSN Chief Medical Editor and Hawaiian Eye 2012 planning committee member, said.
Jointly sponsored by Ocular Surgery News and Vindico Medical Education, Hawaiian Eye 2012 will be hosted at the Grand Wailea Maui Resort Jan. 15 to Jan. 20, running concurrently with the Retina 2012 meeting taking place at the same location. Hawaiian Eye will offer a maximum of 29.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CME credits.
New this year are Banyan Tree sessions, which extend physician education beyond the meeting room to offer a unique opportunity for one-on-one discussions between faculty and colleagues.
The Banyan Tree sessions are opportunities to talk with colleagues about hot topics and to learn new tricks of the trade, such as surgical pearls, new paradigms in treating medical retinal disease or tips about EMR systems. Attendees will be able to earn an additional CME credit for each days Banyan Tree session.
Hawaiian Eye 2012 will kick off with a practice management session Sunday morning with opening remarks by moderator John B. Pinto, followed by sessions focused on cataract surgery and IOLs on Monday, femtosecond laser-assisted phacoemulsification on Tuesday, glaucoma on Wednesday, retina and ocular surface management on Thursday and refractive surgery on Friday.
I am excited to hear the progress being made with femtosecond laser refractive cataract surgery. I am also very interested in updates on minimally invasive glaucoma surgery, Dr. Lindstrom said.
Outside the classroom, the meeting will provide scheduled family-friendly, ophthalmology-free activities, including a sandcastle-building contest Thursday afternoon and a luau in the evening. Both events require pre-registration. by Daniel R. Morgan
