More higher-order aberrations found in older pseudophakic eyes

Higher-order aberrations were shown to be significantly higher in pseudophakic eyes than in younger phakic eyes.
The study authors aimed to compare higher-order aberrations in eyes with aspheric IOLs and in phakic eyes.
The study included 23 eyes of 15 phakic patients age 20 years to 40 years, 32 eyes of 21 phakic patients age 40 years to 60 years, and 21 eyes of 18 pseudophakic patients age 62 years to 84 years who received the AcrySof Natural IQ aspheric IOL (Alcon). Primary outcome measures were higher-order aberrations with a 5-mm pupil and best corrected visual acuity.
The mean higher-order aberration values were 0.54 µm in the younger phakic group, 0.76 µm in the older phakic group and 0.92 µm in the pseudophakic group. Differences were statistically significant between the phakic groups and between the younger phakic group and pseudophakic group (both P < .005).
Results showed no statistically significant differences in BCVA between the three groups.
Spherical and coma aberrations were similar in eyes with an aspheric IOL and younger phakic eyes, although [higher-order aberrations] were higher in pseudophakic eyes, the study authors said. There were no differences between pseudophakic eyes and older phakic eyes in coma and [higher-order aberrations], although pseudophakic eyes had lower spherical aberration.
