LIEPZIG, Germany — Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy may help clinicians differentiate healthy eyes from those with age-related macular degeneration by examining their macular pigment density.
Researchers here examined 10 healthy subjects without ocular pathology and 10 patients with dry AMD. Using scanning laser techniques, the researchers quantified macular pigment density in both groups. With a modified scanning laser ophthalmoscope, the researchers were able to detect differences in macular pigment density between the groups. They note that further study is warranted to determine the reliability and reproducibility of the method.
The study is published in Graefe's Archive of Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology.
