Modified frontalis sling procedure effective for ptotic eyelids

ROCHESTER, Minn. — A simple modification can make the frontalis sling procedure more effective, a surgeon here says. Increasing the area of contact between the fascia lata strips and the frontalis muscle should enhance the muscle's action in elevating the ptotic eyelid, according to George Bartley, MD.

Dr. Bartley, of the Mayo Clinic, suggests modifying the standard frontalis sling procedure as follows. Fascia lata strips of 15 cm or more can be harvested readily from the iliotibial tract, he said. Surgeons can increase considerably the surface area between the fascia lata strips and frontalis muscle by passing the strips superiorly in a fan-shaped pattern.

“The tiny Y-shaped puncture wound produced by each pass of the needle is self-cleaning and heals invisibly,” Dr. Bartley wrote.

The technique is published in the November issue of American Journal of Ophthalmology.
