Mitomycin not recommended in trabeculectomy for juvenile POAG

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — Use of mitomycin-C during trabeculectomy neither hinders nor helps the procedure in patients with juvenile primary open-angle glaucoma, a study found. As a result, the study authors caution against use of the drug for this patient subgroup.

Jen-Chia Tsai and colleagues here at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital conducted a retrospective review of 44 eyes of 36 patients with juvenile primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). All patients underwent trabeculectomy; 15 eyes received adjunctive mitomycin-C. Follow-up was 3 years.

No significant difference was seen in success rates between the two groups at 3 years postop. A greater incidence of hypotony maculopathy was found in the MMC group. A lower intraocular pressure was also noted in the MMC group compared to the control group.

The study is published in the January issue of Ophthalmologica.
