Mitomycin may improve effectiveness of PRK
MILAN, Italy Prophylactic use of diluted mitomycin C after photorefractive keratectomy reduced haze and improved refractive results in a study conducted here.
Francesco Carones, MD, and colleagues performed a prospective, randomized, masked study including 60 eyes of 60 patients treated with PRK. Following ablation, one group received a single 2-minute topical application of mitomycin 0.2 mg/mL over the ablated area.
None of the mitomycin-treated eyes developed haze higher than grade 1 during 6 months of follow-up, compared to 63% (19 eyes) of the control group. A statistically significant difference in the refractive outcome was also seen at 6 months between the groups. Eighty-seven percent (26 eyes) of the mitomycin group and 47% (14 eyes) of the control group were within ± 0.5 D of the intended correction. No mitomycin eyes lost best-corrected visual acuity during follow-up, while seven control eyes lost 1 to 3 lines at 6 months.
The study is published in the December issue of Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery.
