Eyes with a thick Tenon’s capsule can achieve a high success rate and good pressure control after trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C, a long-term study found.

Cengiz Akarsu, MD, and others with Gazi University in Turkey performed primary trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C (MMC) on 45 eyes with a thick Tenon’s capsule. Mean follow-up was 22.5 months. Success was defined as an IOP of less than 21 mm Hg with or without medications.

All postop IOPs and the number of medications at all intervals were significantly lower than preop levels. During follow-up, 38 eyes developed avascular thin-walled bleb, seven developed hypotony (IOP less than 6 mm Hg), 14 had shallow anterior chambers and one developed endophthalmitis.

The study is published in the June issue of Acta Ophthalmologica Scandinavica.
