WAIKOLOA, Hawaii — A “minimalist method” for trypan blue staining is safe, easy, effective and fast, according to the developer of the technique.

Minas Coroneo, MD, of Australia, presented information from the Outback Eye Study here at Hawaii 2005, The Royal Hawaiian Eye Meeting. The study employed the use of trypan blue staining in somewhat complicated cataract cases.

Dr. Coroneo said the trypan blue technique can be used in eyes with a poor red reflex or with corneal scarring.

“Anywhere you think you don’t have a good view of the anterior capsule, this is the way to go,” he said.
