White mature cataracts can be safely removed using a bimanual microincision cataract surgery technique, a small prospective study found.

Timothy Y.Y. Lai, MMedSc, MRCSEd, and colleagues at the Chinese University of Hong Kong evaluated outcomes for 25 eyes of 25 patients treated with the procedure. Of these, surgery was successful in 24 eyes. The remaining one case developed a radial tear during capsulorrhexis creation and required conversion to extracapsular cataract extraction, according to the study.

No patients developed any postoperative complications, the authors noted.

At 1 day postop, best corrected visual acuity improved to 0.6 from hand movements at baseline (P < .001). By 3 months follow-up, all patients had BCVA of 0.6 or better (P < .001), the authors said.

The study is published in the January issue of Ophthalmologica.
