BUDAPEST, Hungary — A new ultra-thin diffractive lens with a surface as smooth as that of a monofocal IOL provides multifocal vision with enhanced quality, no glare and no halos, according to one surgeon speaking at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.

"In this new technology, the transitions between optical zones are clothoid arc connections, which are completely smooth. If you look at the surface of the lens, you don't see the typical multizone design of multifocals, but a continuous, smooth surface," Gianluca Rubiolini, MD, said.

The DIFFRACx (Imperial Medical Technologies) is a plate, 6-mm optic, hydrophilic IOL. It is implanted with an injector through a 1.8-mm incision.

Results in 10 eyes of five patients showed good postoperative refraction, uncorrected visual acuity between 20/25 and 20/20, and near vision between J3 and J2.

"In this small group, this IOL provided a satisfactory full range of vision independence, with 80% of the patients not needing glasses," Dr. Rubiolini said.
