AVENTURA, Fla. — Effective Sept. 1, 2003, a new Code of Ethics on Interactions with Health Care Professionals will be implemented for device manufacturers, according to the Advanced Medical Technology Association.

“This voluntary code addresses the unique aspects of medical technology innovation and dissemination and provides companies a road map for proper interactions with their partners in the health care community,” said Pamela G. Bailey, AdvaMed’s president.

Much like the recently approved guidelines for the pharmaceutical industry (for details, go to www.osnsupersite.com/view.asp?ID=3655), interactions covered by this code include members’ activities to educate and train health care professionals in the use of medical technology as well as sales and promotional activities, gifts to health care professionals, members’ arrangements with consultants and education on reimbursement for new medical technologies.

Ms. Bailey noted the new code excludes other interactions such as those involving product development and intellectual property.
