Mechanical microkeratome produced planar flaps, no complications

BARCELONA — The Moria One Use-Plus SBK microkeratome produced good-quality thin planar flaps, according to a presenter here.

"The flaps obtained were planar and had good-quality edges, and no complications appeared," Daniel Casado, MD, said at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting.

Dr. Casado performed LASIK on 1,350 eyes ages 19 to 53 years old using the Moria One Use-Plus SBK microkeratome. A new microkeratome head was used for each patient. The central corneal thickness was measured immediately before and after the microkeratome passes using an ultrasound pachymeter. The hinge width and vertical flap diameter were measured intraoperatively with calipers. The quality of the flap beds and edges was made subjectively.

The average preoperative pachymetry was 548.71 µm; the average central flap thickness was 100.48 µm. The average vertical flap diameter was 9.26 mm, and the average hinge width was 3.15 mm. Dr. Casado said there were no free caps, buttonholed flaps, abrasions, or cases of diffuse lamellar keratitis or infection.
