Manual small-incision cataract surgery safe with topical anesthesia, intracameral lidocaine

Indian J Ophthalmol. 2008;57(1):3-7.

Manual small-incision cataract surgery with topical anesthesia and intracameral lidocaine can provide high patient satisfaction and few complications.

"[Manual small-incision cataract surgery] can be performed under topical anesthesia with intracameral [lidocaine], which makes the surgery patient friendly, without compromising the outcome," the study authors said.

The prospective, interventional case series included 96 patients with senile cataract. A questionnaire was designed to assess overall surgical experience, pain and complications.

The mean pain score was 0.7 ± 0.97 (range, 0 to 5); 51 patients (53%) had a pain score of 0 (no pain), and 91 patients (95%) had a pain score of less than 3 (mild to no pain).

Complications occurred in one case. The surgeon reported good patient cooperation, anterior chamber stability, low procedure difficulty and low complications. Eye patches were removed after surgery because ocular movements were not affected, the authors said.
