Manifest refraction more accurately predicts post-LASIK sphere, spherical equivalent

Manifest refraction proved more accurate than other methods in yielding the best refractive outcomes after wavefront-guided LASIK and wavefront-optimized LASIK.
The retrospective study included 63 eyes of 33 patients who had a mean age of 44 years and underwent wavefront-guided LASIK and 61 eyes of 36 patients who had a mean age of 37 years and underwent wavefront-optimized LASIK.
Wavefront-guided LASIK was performed with the Visx Star S4 excimer laser (Abbott Medical Optics). Wavefront-optimized LASIK was performed with the WaveLight Allegretto Wave excimer laser (Alcon).
Investigators compared manifest refraction, aberrometer autorefraction (CustomVue WaveScan, AMO) and corneal analyzer autorefraction (OPD-Scan, Nidek). They analyzed actual programmed treatment and absolute deviation from ideal treatment for both LASIK techniques.
Among the wavefront-guided LASIK patients, results showed no significant differences between manifest refraction and aberrometer autorefraction in determining sphere or spherical equivalent, and both were better than corneal analyzer autorefraction.
Among the wavefront-optimized LASIK patients, manifest refraction was significantly more accurate than aberrometer autorefraction or corneal analyzer autorefraction in predicting sphere and spherical equivalent.
