ROME — Macular pseudoholes tend to worsen over time and may develop into full-thickness macular holes, according to a long-term study.

Researchers here followed 27 eyes with macular pseudoholes for 36 months and compared those eyes with 16 age-matched control eyes. Macular sensitivity was assessed by scanning laser ophthalmoscopic (SLO) central and paracentral microperimetry at baseline and every 6 months for 3 years.

Eyes with pseudoholes had at baseline a significant reduction in visual acuity and both central and paracentral SLO measurements compared with the control eyes. After 36 months, further significant decreases in visual acuity and SLO measurements were noted. One-third of eyes with macular pseudoholes showed an evolution into full-thickness macular holes. These eyes had the lowest SLO central microperimetry measurements at baseline.

The study is published in the August issue of Retina.
