JENA, Germany – The PreView PHP for early detection of advanced age-related macular degeneration has been launched in Europe and Asia, with a U.S. launch scheduled for later this year, manufacturer Carl Zeiss Meditec announced in a press release.

The PreView Preferential Hyperacuity Perimeter has shown in early trials the ability to differentiate choroidal neovascularization from intermediate AMD with 85% sensitivity and 87% specificity, the company said.

The test “bases its diagnostic capability on ‘hyperacuity,’ the inherent human ability to visually detect the misalignment of objects relative to other objects in space,” the release said. “This ability is 10 times more sensitive than standard visual acuity.”

According to a company white paper, hyperacuity thresholds are “highly resistant to retinal image degradation and are therefore particularly suitable for assessing retinal function in patients with opaque media.”
