Patients with macular degeneration can access comprehensive, easily understood and up to the minute information about their sight-threatening disease by visiting the Macular Degeneration Partnership (MDP) Internet site at www.macd.net. The MDP, started by macular degeneration patients and their families, created the Web site to provide easily accessible information about age-related macular degeneration (AMD), types of AMD, anatomy of the eye and vision examples. Consumers will be able to learn about the uncontrollable and controllable risk factors of the disease in addition to the importance of a healthy diet, Amsler grid testing and the availability of low vision aids and current treatments.

The site offers a monthly online newsletter, which highlights breaking news, interviews and inspiring stories from AMD patients. Web surfers also can access the site’s newsletter archives of past articles. Answers to frequently asked questions about AMD also are included on this site.

The research and experimental treatment section of the MDP’s Web site discusses treatment options to conventional laser use, but explains that the options are in the experimental stage. Information on ongoing research, including genetic research, photodynamic therapy, macular translocation and submacular surgery, also is provided.

Other therapies discussed consist of microstimulation, rheotherapy and acupuncture, but the site warns consumers that these therapies have not undergone standardized scientific testing. For AMD patients, the site offers a related links page that lists helpful resources such as Low Vision and Lifestyle Training, Technology Resources for Low Vision and Senior Web sites – Aging Resources.
