Low viscosity silicone oil may better prevent retinal redetachment

Using a lower viscosity silicone oil during complex retinal detachment surgery may result in better postoperative visual acuity and lower the risk of redetachment after oil removal, a study suggests.
Masoud Soheilian, MD, and colleagues at Shaheed Beheshti University in Iran retrospectively evaluated the relationship between silicone oil viscosity and successful retinal detachment repair in 82 eyes. Surgeons used 5,000 cs silicone oil in 53 eyes and 1,000 cs oil in 29 eyes.
The researchers found that redetachment occurred more frequently following oil removal in patients in the 5,000 cs group, the study authors said. Visual acuity worse than 6/120 was also associated with use of the more viscous silicone oil, they noted.
The study was published in the online journal BMC Ophthalmology.
